May Our Campfires Burn Forever

Aboriginal culture is one of the oldest cultures in the world and the knowledge of the Seasonal calendar has played an intangible part in caring for the land. The Seasonal Calendar highlights the natural indicators that guide the transition between Seasons.

These inconspicuous indicators are all around us in the growth of plants as they mature and bear fruit, the animals as they reproduce and migrate following the plant cycles for food and water sources, the weather as it changes in response to larger global movements and the stars as the earth slowly rotates. Preserving seasonal knowledge is vital as it ensures that we remain consciously aware of our own environmental footprint, continuing to provide the perfect conditions for Mother Earth to thrive and to supply life for future generations.

We all have a significant place within this cycle, and this powerful traditional knowledge is a key to our success ©

The Noongar Seasons have always been a-part of Aboriginal life and like time itself, the Six Noongar Seasons represent a predictable timetable of foreseeable events. Acknowledgement that nothing is unconnected, and each change is being influenced by the last. Animals, insects and Noongar people have always relied on this process, moving across the land directed by the weather and location of available foods. Plants flower at the same times of year, bearing fruit and reproducing according to this endless cycle ©

NOONGAR SEASON - KNOWLEDGE

Noongar people are the traditional Aboriginal people of Southwest Western Australia. Noongar country, known as 'boodja', stretches from Jurien Bay to Esperance and is home to 14 distinct cultural lands. Like branches of a single tree, each Noongar cultural group holds a unique and sacred connection to their country. These connections are not merely geographical boundaries, but living landscapes shaped by the spiritual relationships, knowledge systems, and stories of each group.

The Six Seasonal Calendar flows through every Noongar group, weaving through all aspects of life. These seasonal changes follow the natural, predictable and observable indicators of the land - indicators that Noongar people have relied upon since the beginning of time. This important traditional knowledge was created by our ancestors who carefully refined this timetable to ensure access to food, water and all the natural resources were responsibly managed in a sustainable way that enabled communities to live and prosper in harmony with country. The Noongar Seasonal Calendar directly translates the ongoing dialog between people and Country, helping us learn from the land as it shares knowledge, guidance, and connection through the changing seasons.

Country is always talking to us, the Noongar Six Seasons knowledge simply allows us to join the conversation.©
